The 2022/23 Champions League is back and there are some fresh faces among the squads for the knockout stages.
It feels as though it’s been ages since the culmination of the Champions League group stage, and it’s not hard to see why with three months passing and the small matter of a World Cup happening since the final match (and draw). But now the last 16 is upon us.
Unfortunately not every world star will be in the last 16, as there were a few shocks in the group stages. Arguably the biggest was the early exit of Barcelona, who will now be playing in the Europa League, with Robert Lewandowski leading the line.
To rub salt into the wounds for Lewandowski, the club he left in the summer for a record fee are not only still in the competition, but they beat Barcelona home and away with Bayern Munich perfect in their group.
Lewandowski’s summer move from Bayern to Barca brought the German champions £42.5m, a fee which may go under the radar for some. So how well do you know the transfer business of the 16 teams left in the 2022/23 Champions League, and specifically their record departures?
