Carlos Alcaraz justified his top-seed ranking with a comfortable 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 straight-sets victory against qualifier Flavio Cobolli in the opening round. It also marked the fourth occasion in 2023 that Alcaraz has registered a bagel and the second time on clay after the 6-7 7-5 6-0 win over Nicolas Jarry in the semifinals of ATP Rio de Janeiro. Alcaraz is seeking to go one better than last year when he reached the quarter-finals.

Given his newfound status, among the pre-tournament favourites, Spain’s newest tennis darling has often struggled against opponents ranked 100 or below. While maintaining a perfect record of eight out of eight sets against top-10 players this year he’s conceded at least one set in five of his last nine matches against players ranked in triple digits.

Taro Daniel, taking on Alcaraz for the first time, earned his only Top-10 victory earlier this season, when he outlasted Casper Ruud at the ATP 500 Acapulco. The 30-year-old also knocked out Alexander Zverev at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Miami this year. His first-round win over Christopher O’Connell (6-0, 6-2, 6-4) surprised many, considering he never won a main-draw match in tour-level events on clay this year before arriving in the French capital, while O’Connell had won eight matches on the surface.

That aforementioned success ended a four-match losing streak at Roland Garros; the Japanese star last reached the second round in 2017, when he couldn’t get past Pablo Carreno Busta. It’s fair to say Daniel will now be looking to claim the biggest win of his career on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets
