The quarter-finals of the 2023 French Open have thrown up a major clash between the world number one and five, but one of Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas will have to bow out. Alcaraz reclaimed the number one spot recently with two ATP Masters 1000 victories at the Indian Wells Masters and Madrid Open, having dropped due to his absence at the Australian Open through injury.

This is just Alcaraz’s fourth appearance at the French Open — not even making it out of qualifying on debut — with a third-round exit in 2021 and quarter-final loss to Alexander Zverev last year. The Spaniard has so far dropped just one set en route to the quarter-finals, with victories over Flavio Cobolli, Taro Daniel, Denis Shapovalov and Lorenzo Musetti.

Tsitsipas, meanwhile, is a one-time finalist at the French Open, losing to Novak Djokovic in 2021 despite leading the final 2-0, ultimately suffering from a great comeback. The Greek superstar followed that up with a fourth-round exit last year, beaten in four sets by Holger Rune.

There has been another final for Tsitsipas in 2023 with the Australian Open, but again Djokovic beat him, only this time it was in straight sets. Like Alcaraz, Tsitsipas has dropped just one set at the French Open so far, with wins over Jiri Vesely, Roberto Carballes Baena, Diego Schwartzmann and Sebastian Ofner en route to the final eight.

The winner will face either Novak Djokovic or Karen Khachanov in the semi-finals.

Prediction: Alcaraz in five sets
