It’s a battle of friends in the Wimbledon quarter-finals with Carlos Alcaraz taking on Holger Rune. The pair played doubles together as youngsters but now only one can make it to the semi-finals of Wimbledon for the first time in their respective careers. Alcaraz comes into the match as the clear favourite, the world No.1 in search of his second Grand Slam having won the US Open last year. The Spaniard sat out of the Australian Open due to injury and made it to the semi-finals in Roland Garros last month, only beaten by Novak Djokovic.
But after that defeat, which dropped Alcaraz down to second in the world, the Spaniard reclaimed top spot with victory at Queen’s, perfect preparation for Wimbledon. After beating Jeremy Chardy and Alexandre Muller in straight sets in the first two rounds, Alcaraz has had to work a little harder for his last two victories, beating Nicolas Jarry in four and Matteo Berrettini 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.
Rune, meanwhile, is at the highest ranking of his career, reaching No.6 in May and staying there so far. The Dane, who is still only 20 (and just a few days older than Alcaraz) has reached back-to-back quarter-finals in Grand Slams and is in fact on his best run in tennis. In each of the last four Grand Slams, Rune has achieved his best-ever finish, and already looks a long way from the man who lost in the first round at Wimbledon last year.
That was Rune’s Wimbledon debut, as the 24th seed, beaten by the experience of Marcos Giron in straight sets. And although Rune started Wimbledon with straight-set victories over George Loffhagen and Roberto Carballes Baena, things haven’t been as simple since. In the third round, Rune was taken to five sets by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and last time out he had to come from behind to beat Grigor Dimitrov 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz in five sets
