Jessica Pegula will be hoping the 2023 French Open is the time she finally gets past the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam. The American has seen five Grand Slams end in quarter-final heartbreak since she started shooting up the rankings, with four of those coming since the start of 2022 — the only exception being a third-round exit at Wimbledon.
At Roland Garros last year it was Iga Swiatek who knocked Pegula out in the quarter-finals, which isn’t anything to be ashamed of, though Victoria Azarenka’s victory at this year’s Australian Open was probably a bit more of a shock result. Pegula made light work of her first round at the French Open, beating compatriot Danielle Collins 6-4, 6-2.
Hoping to stop Pegula long before the quarter-finals is Camila Giorgi, who did reach the fourth round of the French Open last year, only losing out to Daria Kasatkina. Then, Giorgi was the 28th seed but she entered Roland Garros in 2023 unseeded, dropping down to 36th in the world just before the tournament started.
Part of the reason for the drop will have been an underwhelming run in the WTA 1000 Tour this year with two second-round exits at the Indian Wells Open and Miami Open, as well as a first-round defeat in Madrid – though she did make it to the third round of the Italian Open. Like Pegula, Giorgi won her first round match in straight sets, beating Alize Cornet 6-3, 6-4.
