Last year was quite a good one for Cameron Norrie as he really announced himself to the wider tennis public, largely thanks to his run at Wimbledon. While there was a lot of attention surrounding Andy Murray, it was Norrie who carried Britain’s hopes at the tournament all the way to the semi-finals before eventually losing to Novak Djokovic.
Throughout 2022 Norrie either bettered or equalled his best-ever finish at the Grand Slams, with the exception of the Australian Open. There, he bowed out at the first round, one year on from his run to the third. This season he has already improved, beating wildcard Luca Van Assche in straight sets in the first round, winning 7-6 (3) 6-0, 6-3.
It’s another Frenchman in the second round for Norrie, with Constant Lestienne having already gone further than he has ever done at a Grand Slam. as a singles competitor. Prior to the 2023 Australian Open, Lestienne’s best was the third qualifying round of the 2019 US Open and 2020 and 2021 Australian Opens, while a handful of second qualifying round exits.
This year, Lestienne has already reached his career high ranking of 55, and beat Brazilian Thiago Monteiro in the first round in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-3.
