Cagliari v Lazio build-up, pre-match team news & previous line-ups:

Simeone Inzaghi’s men enjoyed an extremely positive 2019/20 season, finishing in fourth — eight points clear of rivals Roma — and qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in five years.

I Biancocelesti face a Cagliari side with one point already on the board having drawn 1-1 with Sassuolo last time out. However, Eusebio Di Francesco’s side had to work hard for the draw, conceding no fewer than 33 shots throughout the 90 minutes.

Having faded away from the title race last season, Lazio will be keen to set an early marker this term, proving they can indeed compete with the likes of Juventus and Inter Milan.

Cagliari (vs Sassuolo): Cragno; Farago, Walukiewicz, Klavan*, Lykogiannis; Marin, Nandez, Caligara, Rog, Pedro; Simeone.

Lazio (vs Benevento): Strakosha; Acerbi, Radu, Patric; Lazzari, Parolo, Lucas, Lukaku; Akpa-Akpro, Correa, Immobile.

Centre-back Ragnar Klavan is out so Fabio Pisacane should step into the breach for Cagliari.

Luiz Felipe and Senad Lulic are both sidelined for Lazio while new signing Vedat Muriqi is not yet ready for selection.

Players to watch:

Lazio: Much of Lazio’s success last season can be pinned to the ridiculous form of striker Ciro Immobile. The Italy international had a stellar season in front of goal, netting no fewer than 36 times in Serie A alone to seal a third Capocannoniere award. Keeping hold of Immobile has been a vital part of Lazio’s summer business and Inzaghi will be looking to his sharpshooter to fire the Rome giants to further glory this term.

Cagliari: After netting 12 times in Serie A last season, Giovanni Simeone got his 2020/21 campaign off to a great start with a goal to put Cagliari ahead last time out. Sure, Di Francesco’s side surrendered their lead but in all honesty, it would have been a smash and grab result to seal three points on the balance of play. Still, the Islanders will be glad to see one of their leading attacking lights get off the mark so quickly, boding well for the campaign ahead.

Scoreline prediction: Cagliari 1-2 Lazio
