Cagliari vs Atalanta build-up & previous line-ups:

As for Cagliari, things are looking desperate as they head into Saturday’s game. They are bottom of the young championship table after winning just one game across 11 outings which includes seven losses. This poor run is Walter Mazzarri’s worst start with a club in Serie A, before this season he had never lost five of his first eight league games with a new club, also Cagliari are currently on six points: in the three points for a win era, only twice have they had fewer at this stage of the competition: five in 2005/06 and five in 1999/00. At home this season they’ve lost three of their opening six matches including last time out against Roma (1-2). Across their previous 27 home matches against Atalanta they’ve won six times with the most recent success coming May 2018 when they ran out 1-0 winners.

Cristiano Ronaldo was once again the bane of Atalanta’s existence when he once again struck for Manchester United in stoppage time. Gian Piero Gasperini’s men were heading towards a 2-1 win but Ronaldo’s late equaliser saw them drop two more Champions League points. On the domestic front Atalanta head into the latest round of Serie A fixtures sitting in fifth place after winning five of their opening 11 matches. This upcoming duel with Cagliari will be Gasperini’s 200th Serie A win as a manager. In the three points for a win era only four managers have reached this milestone: Ancelotti, Allegri, Spalletti and Guidolin. Against these upcoming opponents Atalanta have won each of their last three Serie A away matches against them. Plus among the sides currently in the top-flight, Atalanta are unbeaten for the longest away from home (11 matches: eight wins and three draws) also 13 of their 19 points have come on the road this season (four wins and one draw).

  • Cagliari (vs Bologna): Cragno; Zappa, Godín, Carboni, Lykogiannis; Nández, Strootman, Deiola, Marin; Pedro, Pavoletti.
  • Atalanta (vs Manchester United): Musso; De Roon, Demiral, Palomino; Zappacosta, Koopmeiners, Freuler, Maehle; Pasalic; Ilicic, Zapata.

Player to watch: Luis Muriel (Atalanta)

As touched upon The Goddess have won their last three away games at Cagliari; each of those matches ended 0-1, and in the last two courtesy of Luis Muriel strikes. The 30-year-old Colombian forward has found the net in each of his last three top-flight matches against them including his only two away from home. The much-travelled striker has only made six league appearances this season and missed four games due to a frustrating thigh injury. Muriel, though, has not completed the full 90 minutes once despite starting three matches. After netting on the first matchday against Torino he’s gone five matches without scoring with his scoring drought totalling 253 minutes.
