Roma manager Jose Mourinho has already announced his line-up for Wednesday’s Serie A journey to Cagliari (7.45pm kick-off, UK time).

An ever-mercurial Mourinho publicly selected his starting XI in the immediate aftermath of Roma’s draw with Napoli, with Borja Mayoral, Gonzalez Villar, Amadou Diawara and Bryan Reynolds all continuing to miss out following their horror showing in the infamous 6-1 defeat to Bodo/Glimt.

Cagliari vs Roma build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

The mood may be somewhat sombre in the capital following Roma’s embarrassing 6-1 capitulation against Bodo/Glimt last week, but Cagliari are in an equal state of delirium. In fact, significantly worse. Roma’s demise last week can be bracketed as an isolated incident, but for Cagliari, their demise has endured for much of the campaign thus far, with Walter Mazzarri’s men currently rock bottom in Serie A, and with just the single win to write home about.

The Giallorossi meanwhile are performing with merit domestically, with the Eternal City club currently ensconced in the top four, but of course, there remains the lingering ghost of that Europa Conference League collapse in Norway, as the Italian giants battled the elements to fall to relative minnows Bodo/Glimt. Mourinho saved face at the weekend, as Roma secured a commendable point and clean sheet against Napoli, but now they face a potential banana skin fixture.

  • Cagliari (vs Fiorentina): Cragno; Caceres*, Ceppitelli, Carboni, Lykogiannis; Zappa, Deiola, Marin, Nandez; Balde, Pedro.
  • Roma (vs Napoli): Patricio; Karsdorp, Mancini, Ibanez, Vina; Cristante, Veretout, Zaniolo, Pellegrini, Mkhitaryan; Abraham.

The hosts have quite the extensive casualty list, with the likes of experienced duo Diego Godin and Martin Caceres recently sustaining injuries to join long-term absentee Marko Rog in the Sardinian infirmary, alongside Riccardo Ladinetti, Dalbert and Sebastian Walukiewicz. Roma meanwhile continue to be without Leonardo Spinazzola and Chris Smalling.

Jose Mourinho announces line-up ahead of time

Never one to shy away from a radical reaction following heavy defeats or dip in forms, Mourinho banished Borja Mayoral, Gonzalez Villar, Amadou Diawara, Bryan Reynold and Marash Kumbulla from his squad following that aforementioned defeat in Norway for the weekend’s 0-0 against Napoli.

Four of the five will continue to miss out in midweek against Serie A’s current basement club, but Kumbulla has been offered a lifeline, returning to the matchday squad after sitting out on Sunday. However, if Mourinho’s post-match comments are anything to go by, he will not be starting.

The Portuguese faces a touchline ban after being sent off for dissent against Napoli, but it will be the same drill as Sunday for his players as he has selected the exact same team to face Cagliari, confirming his starting XI in his post-match press conference against the Campanian club

When asked what line-up fans can expect on Wednesday, Mourinho responded on Sunday: “It will be the same one as today.”
