Can Burnley’s dynamic duo extend West Ham slump?
After losing three consecutive games and sliding perilously close to the bottom three, Burnley hit back in style last weekend, taking Wolverhampton Wanderers apart in a 4-0 win on the road.
New Zealand striker Chris Wood grabbed the headlines with a first-half hat-trick and an assist for the Clarets’ fourth goal, but Dwight McNeil also quite rightly took plenty of plaudits. The England U-21 international was a constant menace for the Wolves defence, attempting a match-high six dribbles, while he made three tackles and two interceptions.
But it was his work to provide the assists for Wood’s second and third goals that caught the eye. First, McNeil pressed and won the ball back high up before squaring it across the six-yard box for Wood to fire into an empty net. Then, the 22-year-old delivered a vicious corner right onto the head of Wood, who made no mistake in putting the ball beyond Rui Patricio.
Of McNeil’s 16 career assists in the Premier League, 10 (63%) of them have been for Wood; of all players with at least 15 assists in the competition, McNeil has the highest percentage for one teammate. McNeil and Wood now have the joint-fourth-highest assist-to-goalscorer ratio in the top-flight this season, with the former laying on three times for the latter.
What’s more, Wood has six goals in nine career appearances against West Ham, with only Brighton (8) and Huddersfield (9) suffering more at his hands to date. McNeil, meanwhile, has one goal, one assist and just one defeat in four appearances against the Hammers.
If David Moyes is to inspire his side to a top-four finish, his first task will be to figure out how to stop Burnley’s dynamic duo, who seem to have a thirst for West Ham blood.
