Bristol City will be looking to return to a play-off spot when they host Derby County in midweek.

Lee Johnson’s men fell outside the top six after their 3-1 defeat to Birmingham City on Friday and now sit behind Preston North End, albeit only on goal difference.

They sit seven points clear of opponents Derby who will still feel they have an outside chance of reaching the play-offs, but need to build on their two consecutive wins, starting with a big victory against Bristol City.

Read on for our Bristol City vs Derby preview, predictions, team news and TV coverage information.

Ones to watch

Bristol City: Jamie Paterson

Jamie Paterson spent the first half of the season on loan at Derby but failed to make an impact. In 12 games across all competitions, he managed just one goal and two assists before returning to Bristol City.

Back in the south west, Paterson is enjoying himself once more and has already bettered his Derby tally. The 28-year-old has scored three goals in his past five league games including the opener against Birmingham on Friday, although that goal would ultimately be in vain.

Paterson will be looking to make it two in a row on Wednesday, showing Derby what they’re missing out on.

Key stat: Jamie Paterson has been directly involved in four Championship goals in five games since returning to Bristol City.

Derby: Wayne Rooney

An obvious option, but every Derby game this season will have eyes on Wayne Rooney. England’s all-time top goalscorer certainly isn’t the attacking machine he once was, but the 34-year-old continues in his transformation to a midfielder – and it’s working well.

Rooney is already a key player to Derby despite only joining in January, with most of their play flowing through him, and he is getting involved in goals too. The 34-year-old has two goals and two assists in six Championship games so far, and will be looking to add to his tally this week.

Key stat: Only three Derby players have recorded more assists in the Championship this season than Wayne Rooney (2), who has played six games.

Squawka prediction

Although 11 points separate these two sides in the table, there may not be much between them when they meet on Wednesday.

Despite sitting just outside the play-off places, Bristol City’s home form has been sub-par, amassing 22 points from their 15 league games – the 16th-best record in the Championship.

Meanwhile, Derby have won just twice in the league away from home all season, once on the opening day before getting their second just a few days ago. Asking for two in a row might be too much.

Scoreline prediction: Bristol City 1-1 Derby
