Harry Kane breaks another Premier League record as Tottenham comeback from behind again

Tottenham once again came from behind in the Premier League to rescue a point against Brentford at the Community stadium and extend their unbeaten run on Boxing Day to 16 games.
In what is starting to become a habit for Tottenham, a poor first half performance saw them go into the break 1-0 down against Brentford, after a series of deflections led to Vitaly Janelt putting the ball into an empty net with just 15 minutes on the clock after Fraser Forster could only block the ball straight into his path.
Things then went from bad to worse for Antonio Conte’s side, as Eric Dier’s mistimed clearance went out for a corner that ultimately led to Ivan Toney tapping in what would be his 19th Premier League goal of 2022, with only Harry Kane (26) scoring more in that time.

Spurs looked dead and buried, but for the second consecutive away game, Antonio Conte’s side came back from two goals down to gain at least a point from a precarious position. Harry Kane put his World Cup disappointment behind him with a fantastic header to give his side a glimmer of hope, before Pierre-Emile Højbjerg’s fourth Premier League goal of the season, a goal that equalled his best ever goals tally in a Premier League season ensured Spurs left west London with a hard earned point.
Kane has now scored more Premier League goals on Boxing Day than any other player in the competition’s history (10), extending his run of scoring in every single Boxing Day game he has played in to seven games and taking his tally to 13 league goals in 2022/23. It was also the Tottenham number ten’s sixth headed goal this campaign, which is also a league high, something he has added to his game under the stewardship of Conte.

As well as Kane scoring on Boxing Day, Spurs avoiding defeat is also becoming a Christmas tradition in North London, with the Lilywhites last defeat on the day after Christmas coming all the way back in 2003. Unlike their comfortable 3-0 win over Palace on this day last season, Spurs had to do it the hard way and once again come from behind this afternoon, something that also seems to be a new tradition under Antonio Conte.
Spurs’ resilience is something that has been clear since the Italian took charge, taking 14 points from losing positions in 2022/23, more than any other Premier League side, but it will be their consistent poor starts that will be a worry to their fans, after going behind in each of their previous nine games across all competitions.
“It’s unbelievable, isn’t it? It just follows this pattern. Why? Who knows.” Matthew Upson declared whilst on commentary for Amazon Prime and Spurs fans will be asking the same questions.
It will now be down to Conte to get Tottenham firing from the off, because if they don’t they will get found out sooner rather than later.
