Brazil are the second-most successful nation in AmeriCup history, winning the trophy four times, but they haven’t tasted glory since 2009 and were beaten finalists as defending champions in 2011. But the hosts went perfect in the preliminary rounds including a 72-63 win over Sunday’s opponents Canada. That victory kicked off Brazil’s tournament, and Gustavo De Conti’s men built on that to beat Colombia 100-60 and Uruguay 76-66, securing top spot in Group A.

The first-placed finish earned Brazil a game against Dominican Republic who were the lowest ranked side of the qualifiers, finishing third in Group B and only getting through as one of the best third-placed teams on points difference. However, they did still give Brazil a fairly close game only falling away in the fourth quarter to eventually lose 80-68.

As mentioned, Canada started the 2022 FIBA AmeriCup in defeat to Brazil, not an ideal beginning for a team looking still search for their first taste of glory in the competition. But they were able to bounce back from that defeat first to beat Uruguay 84-78, coming from behind in the second and fourth quarters, and then Colombia 62-61 which included a thrilling final-quarter comeback.

Their performances in Group A ranked Canada as the fifth-best team in the quarter-finals and they were pit against Group C runners-up Mexico. Behind at the end of the first quarter, Canada did comeback to earn some semblance of control and eventually got through 82-77 winners, reaching the semi-finals for the seventh time. They will now be hoping for a third final appearance, previously losing in 1980 and 1999.
