Sporting continue their pursuit of winning back-to-back championships when they visit Braga at Estádio Municipal de Braga on Saturday evening (20:30 UK time).

The Archbishops go into this weekend’s match having won just two of their previous six home league matches. Rúben Amorim’s champions will be seeking to return to winning ways on the road after losing 4-3 to city rivals Benfica last time out.

Braga vs Sporting build-up & previous line-ups:

For a seventh consecutive season SC Braga ended a Primeira Liga sitting either fifth or higher. Carlos Carvalhal’s men ended their 2020/21 campaign just behind Portugal’s ‘big three’ with the gap between them and third place Benfica being 12 points. From the year before Braga were down when it came to goals (61 goals to 53 scored) but their defence improved slightly (40 goals conceded to 33). They also won a game more (18 to 19) while losing two matches fewer (10 to eight). Os Arcebispos began the new season with a 0-2 win at Marítimo and they go into this weekend’s game having won two of their previous three home matches against the defending champions.

The mission Sporting have accepted is to win back-to-back Portuguese championships, something the club last managed nearly seven decades ago. Rúben Amorim’s current charges sensationally ended The Lions 19-year wait for a league title by winning 26 of their 34 league matches and losing just once. Although their attack was third best (65 goals scored) behind title rivals Benfica (69) and FC Porto (74) they boasted the league’s best defence with only 20 goals conceded. They’ve started this season on the front foot by running out 3-0 winners against newly-promoted Vizela.

Player to watch: Pedro Gonçalves (Sporting)

There was a strong argument that Pedro Gonçalves was the Primeira Liga’s most outstanding player last season. The 23-year-old Portuguese midfielder-cum-forward, who successfully filled the void left by the mercurial Bruno Fernandes, lost the ‘Primeira Liga Player of the Year’ award to Sporting teammate Sebastián Coates who also had a strong campaign marshalling their backline. Gonçalves registered 23 goals across 32 league appearances whilst assisting a further three. Pote started the new season by picking up from where he left off by striking twice in The Lions opening fixture against Vizela. However in three previous Primeira Liga meetings with Braga he’s scored one goal and created one more.
