Bournemouth have announced the signing of Lloyd Kelly from Bristol City, making him the Premier League’s first summer signing of 2019.
The 20-year-old left-back joins for a reported £13m and has subsequently penned a long-term contract at the Vitality Stadium.
Who is Lloyd Kelly? Four things to know…
- Age: 20
- Position: Left-back
- Key stat: Has already won three England U21 caps.
- Did you know? Kelly is capable of playing in central defence.
Kelly’s announcement comes on the back off the England U21 international being heavily associated with a move to Champions League finalist Liverpool.
In the end, Bournemouth usurped both the Reds and Arsenal for his signature and the young English defender is pleased with his transfer.
“It’s a fantastic club. The move has come around quite quickly, but I’m happy to be here and can’t wait to start playing,” he told the club’s official website.
“Premier League football is what I’ve always wanted to achieve. I want to play as many games as possible and I feel like this is the right place for me to try and do that.”

The first of many…
Kelly’s signing is surely the starting gun to what many expect to be another busy summer transfer period for the Premier League.
A graduate of Bristol City’s academy, Kelly ultimately made 48 appearances in all competitions for his boyhood club, registering two goals and creating a further two.
Although nominally a left-back, he’s capable of being deployed in central defence, giving Cherries boss Eddie Howe numerous tactical options.

“Lloyd is an exciting talent and a player of real potential, while at the same time already possessing good experience for someone so young,” he said.
“He is athletic, versatile, physically excellent and has a very bright future ahead of him. I’m delighted that we have been able to strike so early in the summer and look forward to working with Lloyd during the coming seasons.”
