Napoli will look to keep their momentum going when they travel to face Bologna on Wednesday evening (6:30pm).

Gennaro Gattuso’s Champions League dreams are virtually over, as Napoli 16 points behind fourth-placed Lazio with just six games remaining. It means they need the capital club to lose every match combined with a perfect record of their own to stand a chance.

Napoli also have very little to fight for with regards to the Europa League, already guaranteed a group stage spot thanks to their Coppa Italia win. Instead their aims will be to build momentum towards the end of the seasonas they gear up for their Champions League last-16 second leg against Barcelona, a tie fairly evenly poised at 1-1. Napoli are unbeaten in their past three games, since a defeat at the hands of Atalanta, and will be positive of continuing the run against Bologna.

For Bologna there are still faint hopes of a Europa League place. They are 10 points behind Wednesday’s opponents and eight off seventh-placed AC Milan (the final qualification spot as it stands). They also hold the advantage in recent meetings between the two sides, winning their last two league games against Napoli, searching for a third consecutive victory for the first time since 1937.

  • Napoli (vs AC Milan): Ospina; Di Lorenzo, Maksimovic, Koulibaly, Rui; Fabian, Lobotka, Zielinski; Callejon, Mertens, Insigne.

Player to watch:

Doubts have been surrounding his future for some time now, but once again Kalidou Koulibaly is being linked with a move away from Napoli.

The 29-year-old has been a rock at the heart of Napoli’s defence since joining from Genk in 2014, and continues to perform at the top level despite enduring an injury-hit 2019/20 campaign in which he has featured just 20 times so far. But during that time, the Senegalese centre-back has averaged 64.38 passes per 90 minutes and won 2.39 aerial duels, displaying his quality both in the air and on the ground while also making 2.5 tackles per 90.

In the past, Koulibaly has been linked with a move to the Premier League, most notably Chelsea and Manchester United, but now the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal have been credited with interest.

Free from their Champions League ban, Man City are reportedly looking to boost their defence and quicken a planned rebuild, looking to Koulibaly to provide security at the back. Arsenal are also planning to bolster their backline following an underwhelming season from last summer’s signing David Luiz.

However, English clubs have been handed a minor blow with Koulibaly hinting that his future lies with Napoli – planning to honour the three years remaining on his current deal.

“In football, you never now what happens,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I never spoke to Napoli about leaving. If we have to find a solution, we will find it, but I have never talked about the transfer market.

“I also read in the newspapers about my future. But I only want to think about playing, I am 100 per cent [committed to] Napoli and it bothers me to be linked, every day, to this or that European club.

“We will see what the president will decide and if he proposes to extend my contract, that would allow me to end my career here.

“At the moment, I still have a three-year contract and I am not thinking of anything else but Napoli.”

Scoreline prediction: Bologna 1-2 Napoli
