Boca Juniors host Newell’s Old Boys on Sunday night (10:20pm, UK time) in what is sure to be an emotional fixture between two of Diego Maradona’s former clubs.
There has been a global outpouring of grief following Wednesday’s tragic passing of one of the greatest players and most remarkable characters to ever grace the game, with Argentina president Alberto Fernandez declaring a three-day period of mourning for a national icon.
“His unparalleled footballing skill transformed him into one of the best-known people in the world, crossing frontiers and being universally recognized as the world’s best player,” said the official mourning decree.
Maradona scored 40 goals in 71 appearances for Boca across two spells at the club, winning the 1981 Argentine Primera Division Metropolitano along the way, while he also made five appearances for Newell’s towards the end of his career, shortly before rejoining Boca.
As such, it feels like football will almost take a backseat on Sunday. Still, both sides will be eager to pay tribute to their country’s most iconic export with a victory. With that in mind, let’s take a look at what we can expect on the pitch.

Player to watch: Ramon Abila (Boca)
In the absence of Tevez, Miguel Ángel Russo is likely to turn to Ramon Abila in search of goals against Newell’s on Sunday. Now 31, Abila has enjoyed a nomadic career in South America, playing extensively in the Argentine lower divisions, as well as for Brazilian side Cruzeiro before joining Boca in 2017.
Abila is best known for his aerial dominance and robust approach when it comes to opposition defenders. That non-compromising style has helped him notch five goals and one assist in 11 appearances for Boca this calendar year and he’ll be looking to add to that tally in what is a vital fixture for his club.
Scoreline prediction: Boca Juniors 2-1 Newell’s Old Boys
