The transfer window has officially slammed shut, which means that major European teams will have to make do with what they’ve got until January.

One man who will be particularly fuming that he wasn’t on the move is Neymar. The Brazilian flirted with a transfer to Barcelona for months but ended up going nowhere.

His theoretical switch back to La Liga may well have seen transfer records tumble, but a new milestone of £5 billion was collectively spent by clubs in Europe’s top five leagues even without the 27-year-old’s huge fee coming into play.

Atletico Madrid spent big on Portuguese youngster Joao Felix, Real Madrid finally got their hands on Eden Hazard and Frenkie de Jong was whisked away to the Nou Camp.

Matthijs de Ligt decided to snub a host of elite clubs and join Juventus, Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan revolution caught the eye of Romelu Lukaku and Mexico star Hirving Lozano headed to Napoli.

Meanwhile – somewhat predictably – vast sums of money were spent by Premier League clubs, with Harry Maguire’s move to Manchester United the most costly.

However, although there were plenty of exciting deals for supporters to get stuck into, we’re sure some of them will have passed you by.

So, we’ve cast our eyes back over the last few months to evaluate where clubs in Europe’s top five leagues splashed the cash. Do their decisions represent shrewd moves or disasters waiting to happen?
