Caroline Garcia vs Bianca Andreescu preview and prediction
When we last checked in with Bianca Andreescu, at the 2022 Italian Open in Rome, she was in the midst of her return to competitive tennis after two-and-a-half years away from the sport, due to a major knee injury, COVID cancellations and a six-month mental health hiatus. That tournament ended in the quarterfinals for Andreescu, with a 7-6, 6-0 defeat at the hand of the #1 seed, Iga Świątek. The Canadian has continued her comeback quite impressively, taking the court at the French Open, the Grass Court Championships in Berlin in doubles (with Sabina Lisicki; they reached the semifinals), the Hamburg Open, Wimbledon, the Silicon Valley Classic, and the Canadian Open.
Andreescu kicked off her 2022 U.S. Open on Monday (August 29) with an ‘easy three set win’ over France’s Harmony Tan, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1, and has since knocked off Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia, the tournament’s #15 seed, in straight sets (6-2, 6-4). Her odds to win the 2022 U.S. Open are now as low as 12/1 at some sportsbooks, though there is still an attractive 16/1 to be had at Sky Bet.
The highlight of Andreescu’s comeback thus far has been the Hamburg Open in late June, which she nearly won. In her run to the final, she knocked off the tournaments #7 seed Martina Trevisan, top-seed Daria Kasatkina and, in the semifinal, the #4 seed Simona Halep. She then went on to take the first set in the final, 7-6, before falling 6-4, 6-4, to France’s Caroline Garcia, her opponent in the U.S. Open’s third round on Friday.
Since her victory in that final in Hamburg, Garcia has, by and large, been fantastic. Immediately afterward, she advanced to the round of 16 at Wimbledon and the semifinals of the Ladies Open Lausanne. After a quarterfinal exit in the Palermo Ladies Open, she went to win the Poland Open and the Cincinnati Masters (with a disappointing opening round defeat at the Canadian Open sandwiched in between.
Garcia entered the U.S. Open as the tournament’s #17 seed, and has thus far made quick work of the competition eliminating each of her first two opponents, Kamilla Rakhimova (6-2, 6-4) and Anna Kalinskaya (6-3, 6-1) in straight sets. Garcia is among a group players seen as most likely to capture the title should #1 seed Iga Świątek (roughly 3/1 across the board) fail to do so. At the time of writing, Garcia’s odds to win the 2022 U.S. Open are as low as 8/1 at some books, with Sky Bet offering the biggest payout, at 11/1.

If these two women’s skill levels and recent form (to say nothing of their excellent head-to-head matchup in the final in Hamburg) are any indication, this promises to be an exciting and entertaining matchup. It certainly seems as though Sky Bet is anticipating a competitive matchup, with Garcia only a 4/6 favorite, and Andreescu a slim 6/5 underdog to advance.
