The bottom side in the Premier League welcome the bottom side in League Two to Molineux in what will be Julen Lopetegui’s first game in charge. Wolves will be looking to reach the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup for the first time since the 1995/96 season and they won’t have a better chance as they face a Gillingham side that just can’t find the back of the net.
The Gills have scored just six times in their opening 20 League Two matches in 2022/23, at least eight fewer than any other side in the division and have failed to score in eight of 10 away matches in the league. Forward Mikael Mandron has scored just one goal this campaign in his 20 league matches, which is is the polar opposite to his form in the League Cup, finding the back of net twice in three substitute appearances, including the all important equaliser in the last round against Brentford.
Wolves, also struggled to find the back of the net at the beginning of the campaign and don’t expect them to suddenly start smashing the goals in under Julen Lopetegui, with his Sevilla side scoring just 13 times in 14 LaLiga matches in his well known defensive approach to matches.
Saying that, they should be too good for Gillingham and we expect them to advance with relative ease to the quarter-finals.
