This season has not started as either Wolves nor Nottingham Forest would have liked, with both Midlands clubs currently circling the Premier League drain in these formative stages, placing a huge emphasis on this showdown at Molineux on Saturday afternoon. Defeat either way will really amp up the early pressure and elicit more than a few sweaty palms.

Steve Cooper recently put pen to paper on a new deal at the City Ground, so for now his job appears safe, but the current Premier League landscape makes for uncomfortable reading for those of a Forest persuasion. The newly-promoted club are currently 19th in the table and have won just one of their opening nine games.

Wolves went the opposite way to Forest with Cooper, and sacked Bruno Lage. Criticised for his stale brand of football, in which Wolves’ attack had the hard edge of oatmeal, the Portuguese suffered an early managerial casualty. Yet to find a successor, the West Midlands club are currently 18th, and like Forest, have just one win to show for their early efforts.

Wolves v Nottingham Forest match stats

Emmanuel Dennis started and scored for Forest last time out in the club’s 1-1 draw to Aston Villa, and he will be itching to build on that strike. Cooper would do well to retain Dennis’ place in the first-team, as 10 of his 11 Premier League goals have come in starts, including each of his last eight strikes.

For Wolves, Diego Costa could prove the difference-maker. He started in the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea at the weekend and will be eyeing up another run-out from minute one. The mercurial sharp-shooter has been involved in 12 goals in 16 Premier League appearances against newly-promoted sides from his time at Chelsea (10 goals, two assists).

Even if Wolves go a goal down, only Leicester (14) have dropped more points from winning positions than Forest (10) in the Premier League this season, so don’t expect it to be a foregone conclusion that the visitors will hold firm if such a scenario materialises.
