Sean Dyche came in and saved Everton’s season in 2022/23 when, at various stages, they looked destined for the drop. The gravelly-voiced tactician will now be preparing for his first full campaign at Goodison Park, and he will be hoping the spectre of relegation doesn’t enter the conversation in 2023/24.
Transfers have been slow so far, with only veteran full-back Ashley Young joining on a free, while Tom Davies, Yerry Mina, Conor Coady and Andros Townsend have all departed the club. That hasn’t stopped them from making a strong start to their pre-season, though, winning their first game against Stade Nyonnais in Switzerland.
Wigan, unlike Everton, were unable to stave off the threat of relegation last season, dropping out of the Championship in dead last. Shaun Maloney joined midway through the campaign, but was unable to prevent the seemingly inevitable. His services have been retained, and he will now look to fire the club back up to the second tier at the first time of asking.

Dwight McNeil is a different player altogether when he plays under Dyche. In the first half of 2022/23, the wily winger was struggling for form and a tangible output, but following appointment of the former Burnley boss in late January — whom McNeil worked under at Turf Moor — his progress accelerated. The 23-year-old would have a direct hand in seven goals under Dyche, including five goals and two assists, influencing wins over Arsenal, Brighton and Brentford.
One of the more interesting signings to look out for at the DW Stadium is the return of Callum McManaman, whom Maloney starred alongside when the club famously won the FA Cup in 2013 at the expense of Manchester City. A decade later the pair have reunited in Greater Manchester. This will be McManaman’s third stint at the club following that impressive breakthrough and a brief return in 2019/20. He joins from Tranmere Rovers after a spell at Melbourne Victory.

You would have to go back to just over a decade for the last time these two clubs met. That came in March 2013, when Roberto Martinez’s men smashed three past David Moyes’ side en route to that triumph over City in the FA Cup final. On the scoresheet that day was McManaman, as well as Maynor Figueroa and Jordi Gomez.
