This is a game that could have a big impact at both ends of the table. Visitors Coventry are sitting on the cusp of the play-off places, just four points behind sixth-placed Millwall with 10 games left to play. It’s testament to the faith Coventry showed in Mark Robins after a rocky start to the season, which may have led other clubs to pulling the trigger.

The Sky Blues won just one of their opening 10 games in the Championship but then won seven of their next nine before the World Cup break. It hasn’t been plain sailing, and there was another rocky period which saw Coventry win one in nine including four defeats, also having to play catchup due to some missed matches. But they are now unbeaten in six games, with four wins including victories over Millwall and Sunderland.

Wigan, meanwhile, have 10 games to save their Championship status. The Latics are bottom of the table, one of three teams level on 32 points, and there is a gap opening up above them. There are now six points between Wigan and safety, and it’s an uphill battle for Shaun Maloney.

The Scot is Wigan’s third manager of the season after Leam Richardson and Kolo Toure, but Maloney isn’t having the best of times in the dugout. Maloney has taken charge of eight matches so far and has managed just one win with three defeats. At the same time, Wigan have had to watch on as their relegation-battling rivals Huddersfield and Blackpool appoint experienced managers Neil Warnock and Mick McCarthy respectively to aid their survival hopes.

Coventry won the previous meeting this season and will be looking to do the league double over Wigan for the first time in their history. However, that isn’t as bad as it may sound as these two sides have only met on nine occasions previously with two of those in the FA Cup.
