Blackburn have endured a bit of a Jekyll-and-Hyde season under Jon Dahl Tomasson, suffering the most defeats of any club in the top half of the Championship (13 losses), but still keeping themselves within touching distance of the play-off spots (just one point).

Indeed, the Riversiders’ poor tally of defeats has been significantly mitigated by an equally impressive win rate, with only Championship leaders Burnley (19 wins) and Sheffield United (17 wins) collecting more triumphs than their 14. The Lancashire club have seriously blown hot and cold, a notion emphasised by their latest 1-1 stalemate with Bristol City which, incredibly, was their first draw of the entire season.

Such inconsistency often makes them ripe for an upset, giving Wigan a serious chance to collect some much-needed points and galvanise their push for safety. Shaun Maloney — who was drafted in late last month following his departure from the Belgian national set-up after Roberto Martinez’s exit — will be hoping to offset their recent tailspin and stop a rot of seven successive winless games.

Blackburn vs Wigan match stats

Ben Brereton Diaz is set to join Villarreal in the summer upon the expiration of his contract at Ewood Park, but the Chile international will be giving his all to help Blackburn push for promotion. With nine goals this season, he has once again been prolific in the English second tier, while he has also registered 74 shots, the fifth-most of any player.

For Wigan, Max Power will likely prove their biggest difference-maker. The Birkenhead-born midfielder has created 48 chances in the Championship this campaign, which places him in the top 10 — certainly no small feat for a player turning out for the club currently propping up the Championship table.

Wigan have only won six games this season, but one of those actually came against Blackburn back in October. The now-ousted Leam Richardson masterminded a 1-0 triumph thanks to Nathan Broadhead’s strike on the hour mark. You would have to go back to 2012 for the last time Wigan won at Ewood Park, which came when both clubs were in the Premier League. Martinez beat Steve Kean’s side 1-0 with Antolin Alcaraz netting three minutes from time.
