West Ham came desperately close to reaching the Europa League final last season, but just buckled at the penultimate hurdle to eventual winners Frankfurt. David Moyes will now desperate to put together another prolonged run in the latter stages of continental football — and his bid to see that happen starts on Thursday against FCSB.
It’s an interesting group for the Hammers, which also contains Belgian powerhouse Anderlecht and Silkeborg, located in the middle of the Jutlandic peninsula, just a stone’s throw from their play-off qualifier against Viborg a few weeks back. West Ham, of course, have previous against the Romanian club, or their former iteration (then known as Steaua Bucharest), with Harry Redknapp’s men losing 2-0 in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup second round. Moyes will be aiming to exorcise that demon.
For FCSB, they have reached the main round of a UEFA competition for the first time since 2017/18, progressing to the Europa League last 32 back then. Managed by former Romania assistant coach Nicolae Dica, the ex-attacking midfielder will out to blunt the Hammers’ European ambitions once again, just over two decades since the club last put them to the sword.

Gianluca Scamacca has really shown what he’s capable of in the Europa Conference League qualifiers this season, netting in both games against Viborg. The summer signing from Sassuolo has scarcely featured in the Premier League, but in midweek continental football, the Italian has come alive, scoring a header on his starting debut against Viborg, and then breaking the deadlock away from home in a 6-1 aggregate win to reach the groups. He has been out for the last two Premier League games but is expected back here and will be relishing the chance to add to his European tally for the Hammers. For the visitors: with two goals each, Florinel Coman, Andrei Cordea, Malcom Edjouma, and Risto Radunovic were FCSB’s leading scorers in European qualifying.

You’d have to go back to just before the turn of the century to find the only other time these two clubs met. Back when they were known as Steaua Bucharest, Harry Redknapp’s men lost 2-0 away from home and drew their home tie 0-0 in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup second round. The Hammers had the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Paolo Di Canio all playing for them but couldn’t get the job done.
