West Brom vs Southampton: Predictions

West Brom took a huge step in their bid for Premier League safety last time out, battering 10-man Chelsea 5-2 at Stamford Bridge, which has reduced the gap on 17th-place Newcastle to eight points; still a huge chasm but now down to single figures, and with the Baggies booming after that confidence-inducing win over Thomas Tuchel’s Blues, they take to the Hawthorns with their tails up.

Southampton, likewise, rallied last week and overturned a deficit, fighting back from 2-0 down to Burnley and securing a huge 3-2 win, only their second Premier League triumph across their last 13 games, which has just alleviated some of the pressure building on Ralph Hasenhuttl’s shoulders.

The Saints are now in that awkward stage of the season where they are neither in threat of relegation or really in with a chance of pushing for Europe, so complacency can often creep in, but Hasenhuttl is a relentless tactician and he will not be letting his guard down, taking to every game with relish.

Sam Allardyce will welcome the challenge. Drafted in to safeguard the club and navigate a path to survival, the experienced firefighter will know every game from now until the end of the season is a cup final, and they need to start collecting points now, or risk drifting further behind.

West Brom vs Southampton: Match Stats

If you cast your mind back to Allardyce’s polarising tenure at West Ham, fans were often left underwhelmed by his ‘respect the point’ mentality, but the approach stabilised the club and kept them afloat after a diabolical few years, and that is exactly what the Baggies need right now. In fact, over half of Allardyce’s Premier League matches against Southampton have ended as a draw (10/18). Wins may be vital at this stage, but not losing should be the priority.

What’s more, West Brom seem to perform rather poorly when matches aren’t played on Saturdays — all four of their Premier League wins this season have indeed come on Saturdays. Allardyce will therefore be looking to buck that trend on Monday, and one player who could sway the complexion of this contest is Matheus Pereira, the club’s top scorer (seven goals) and chief creator (five assists), who had a hand in four of West Brom’s five goals against Chelsea at the weekend.

Their 2-0 defeat in October was a routine triumph for Hasenhuttl’s side, with goals from Moussa Djenepo and surprise scorer Oriol Romeu securing the three points for the Saints.
