Despite the 2021/22 season being firmly in its infancy the pressure is already beginning to mount for both clubs, particularly in the West Midlands. Summer appointment Bruno Lage is currently on a streak of three straight defeats, while newly-promoted Watford have lost back-to-back games.
It must be dispiriting for Lage watching compatriot and predecessor Nuno Espirito Santo flourishing at his new club, with Tottenham top of the league, while his side are firmly entrenched in the relegation mire without a point. Granted it has not been the easiest of starts, but the table does not look encouraging.
Lage’s Premier League baptism of fire has seen Wolves take on Leicester, Man Utd and Spurs, with his side losing each of those contests 1-0. With that tough run out of the way, he must now look to collect points in these so-called ‘winnable’ fixtures, or risk the early pressure intensifying.
For Watford, that opening-day triumph over Aston Villa has just been subdued with Xisco losing successive games without scoring. A result here for both clubs is pretty significant, even in these early stages, or audible murmurs of discontent may start to permeate the terraces, such is the harsh terrain of top-flight football.
Watford vs Wolves: Match Stats
Wolves have not scored this season, but not for the want of trying on Adama Traore and Raul Jimenez’s part. Incredibly, despite not yet opening their account, Wolves have had 57 shots in the Premier League this season (the third highest tally), while Traore and Jimenez have created eight chances for each other, more than any other duo in the competition this term. In fact, Jimenez is the only player to have registered double figures for both shots (12) and chances created (10) this term. Something surely has to give here, right?

This will be the fifth Premier League meeting between these two clubs, with each side winning two apiece so far. When the Hornets were last in the top flight, each club won their respective home ties, with that last meeting at Vicarage Road seeing 10-man Watford triumph 2-1, though that result ultimately didn’t help the club prevent dropping down.
