After an excellent end to the 2022/23 campaign under Unai Emery which yielded European football, the work this summer starts here for Aston Villa. In their traditional friendly against local neighbours Walsall, the Midlands side will be expected to kick off pre-season in the best manner possible, with goals the minimum requirement against League Two opposition.
More importantly, it’s a chance for Emery to judge where his squad is at after a summer of youth tournaments for some, and holidays for others.
In Walsall, Villa face an opponent that is once again stuck in League Two, finishing 16th in the table for the second year in a row last season.

Walsall vs Aston Villa match stats
The last four meetings between these two sides in their annual friendly have seen Villa score at least four goals per game and 17 overall, conceding just twice during that time, so expect plenty of attacking joy for the visitors. That said, the match is more about fitness and getting players back up to speed.
It’s also a chance for some younger players to prove their worth to Emery, including Jhon Duran. The Colombian talent cost Villa a whopping £14m from Chicago Fire back in January but he’s yet to score in 12 appearances for his new club, so this match could represent a huge confidence boost for the 19-year-old.
