England’s goalless draw against the USA put a pause on their progression into the knockout phase. Gareth Southgate’s men can secure qualification with victory but all eyes will be on his team selection. Three Lions record goalscorer Wayne Rooney feels unused substitute Phil Foden should be there from kick-off.
“I found it very strange that Foden did not come on as a substitute against the USA, and as I wrote in these pages before the tournament, he would be a key part of my starting XI if I were the England boss. Technically, he is the best footballer England have,” he wrote in his Times column.
“I think if you have a talent like Foden, you simply have to play him. He is now a different player from the one we saw at Euro 2020, when he struggled to make an impact.
“He is more mature and came into this tournament on the back of a long period of brilliant performances for Manchester City. He has the form to go with the ability. If I were him, I would be very frustrated that I didn’t get on the pitch at any stage of Friday’s game.”
Another former Man Utd player has also been speaking about the talent at Southgate’s disposal, with Louis Saha risking the wrath of PSG fans by suggesting Marcus Rashford can very much hold a candle to French sensation Kylian Mbappe.
“I really like Marcus Rashford, you know he can be a starter, he’s such a talent and threat,” Saha said. “In less than 20 minutes against Iran, he showed how dangerous he can be. I love Harry Kane, but Rashford is just a humongous talent and I love to see him at this level.
“Kane is the best player, but Rashford is my favourite player in the England squad because of his style and I really enjoy watching him play. When Rashford has the eye of the tiger, he’s unplayable and at the same level as Kylian Mbappe.”
As for Wales they still have a chance of reaching the last 16 despite losing to Iran on Friday. To qualify, Rob Page’s men need to beat England and hope for a draw between the U.S. and Iran. If the USA-Iran match doesn’t end in a draw, the Dragons must beat England by four goals to advance.
Leeds United forward Dan James, who fell out of Page’s lineup for the first time in 35 games, is not giving up any hope. “We’ve got look at what we could’ve done better in this game and try and take the positives out of it. We’ve got to go into that game (against England) with no fear. We’ve got nothing to lose. We’re here. We’ve got one game left. We can’t go into that thinking we’ve already lost. We can pick ourselves up.”
