The USWNT are once again favourites to win the Women’s World Cup for what would be a fifth time, also becoming the first nation (men’s or women’s) to win three World Cups in a row. In France four years ago USA beat Netherlands in the final and the pair have been drawn together in the groups though we will have to wait for that showdown. USWNT won their spot at this year’s tournament by topping their group at the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship with a perfect record of three wins from three games, en route to winning the tournament.

That spot was sealed a year ago but USWNT ended 2022 with a bit of a rocky period, losing three games in a row against England, Spain and Germany. Things have turned around since with nine victories in a row including a win over Germany to close 2022 before claiming yet another SheBelieves Cup glory. USWNT also go into the World Cup off the back of a hard-fought 2-0 win over Wales, which will definitely have helped Vlatko Andonovski in making some line-up decisions.

On the other side of this game, Vietnam are making their World Cup debut, one of eight nations to be appearing in the tournament for the first time. Vietnam were one of the first teams to secure their spot in the World Cup, doing so by winning the Asian Cup play-offs in February 2022, topping the mini group ahead of Chinese Taipei and Thailand.

Not wanting to go into the World Cup cold, Vietnam have tested themselves against fellow tournament sides Germany and New Zealand in the build up to the summer and although they lost both games there were positives. Vietnam gave Germany serious problems in their 2-1 defeat and a draw would have certainly been a fair result had they managed to secure it.

Although Vietnam did give Germany a game, and USWNT had some issues against Wales, once tournament football starts the real world champions will step up. As part of their nine-game winning run since the end of 2022, USWNT have kept seven clean sheets, only conceding to Brazil and Germany.

Alex Morgan is the Golden Boot favourite not just for the USWNT, but for the tournament as a whole; however, Andonovski has a lot of attacking talent from which to choose. In the 2-0 friendly win over Wales, a tough Welsh defence was only finally broken down after Trinity Rodman came onto the pitch, with the Washington Spirit forward scoring twice including a rocket to make the win more comfortable.
