This will be a repeat of the 2019 Women’s World Cup final. Defending champions USA outlasted the Netherlands, then European champions, running out 2-0 winners. Megan Rapinoe and Rose Lavelle scored to seal the USWNT’s fourth World Cup success.
Both teams come into matchday two seeking to maintain their respective winning starts. USA humbled newcomers Vietnam with talented young forward Sophia Smith registering a brace while Lindsey Horan rounded off the scoring.
“What can you say about that performance?” said Megan Rapinoe of Smith. “She was incredible. She is incredible. That was no surprise to me, to any of us. She’s been doing that in the league for years now.
“The sky’s the limit for Sophia. Really. Performing at this level at such a young age, she can do whatever she wants to. Records are there to be broken. She’s already at the top. She’s only 22.”
As for the Dutch, it was a more subdued performance against Portugal, they sealed all three points through a 13th-minute Stefanie van der Gragt effort. Van der Gragt’s goal also proved to be the Netherlands’ earliest goal ever in the tournament.
