Despite bringing an experimental roster into the Gold Cup, the USMNT have been mightily impressive, overcoming a disappointing 1-1 draw with Jamaica in their opening group game to crush St. Kitts & Nevis and Trinidad & Tobago by 6-0 scorelines. The likes of Jesus Ferreira and Brandon Vazquez have been in fine form for the Stars and Stripes, whose backline has barely been tested throughout the tournament.

That said, Canada will, of course, provide a much sterner test. Sure, John Herdman is without his star players like Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David and Cyle Larin — who are taking a well-earned rest — but there’s still more than enough talent on the roster to hurt any team at the Gold Cup. What’s more, the growth of soccer in Canada has been so rapid that they’ll look to take any opportunity to get one over the United States and prove they’re now one of the North American powerhouses.

USA vs Canada match stats

The USA are comfortably the top scorers at the Gold Cup so far with 13 goals from three matches, 12 of which came in their final two group games. FC Dallas forward Jesus Ferreira has bagged six of those goals, leaving him three clear at the top of the Golden Boot standings. He’s been backed up by a supporting cast including AZ Alkmaar’s Djordje Mihailovic and Gianluca Busio of Venezia, who have two assists each.

No Canadian player has scored more than one goal at this tournament so far, which is a perfect illustration of how they’ve struggled, winning just one of their three group games and scoring only six goals.
