Before the tournament started, many had tipped France and Denmark to be the two sides going through to the last 16 from Group D, and while Les Bleus may still seal top spot, second place is slightly less certain. That’s because in their opening game of the tournament, Tunisia held Denmark to a goalless draw, to remain in control of their knockout stage hopes. Tunisia have never made it out of the group stage at the World Cup, falling at the first hurdle in each of their previous five appearances.
They have also managed just two wins from 15 games prior to the tournament, with five draws and nine defeats. But Tuesday’s game against Denmark showed that Tunisia are capable of frustrating opponents, operating a mid/low block that is resolute at times. It almost came undone in the dying stages of the match, as Denmark had a penalty appeal turned down even after VAR had advised the referee to review, but Tunisia gained a vital point.
Ten minutes into their World Cup opener against France, Australia were in dream land. They had caught the defending champions in a bad position, outplaying Didier Deschamps side, and there wouldn’t have been too many complaints when Craig Goodwin gave Australia the lead. The goal rocked France and Australia may have made more of it, before eventually letting Les Bleus dominate.
By half-time it was 2-1 to France and in the end Australia lost 4-1, rooting them to the bottom of the table, but that doesn’t mean they are out. Due to Denmark and Tunisia drawing, and Denmark facing France on Saturday, a win for Australia could push them into second with one game left to play. Fail to win here and it all comes to the final day, lose and they’re out.

Tunisia vs Australia match stats
As mentioned, Tunisia frustrated Denmark with their mid/low-block on Tuesday, but they also had just one shot on target. Taking 11 attempts overall, seven were wide of the mark including a couple of wild efforts, while three were blocked with a total xG of 0.92.
And Australia weren’t much better. Even though they took the lead against France, Australia had just four shots overall with their goal being the only effort on target. Only three teams have managed a lower xG than Australia’s 0.52 at the World Cup so far, and they didn’t manage a shot past the 46th minute against France.
