Tottenham vs Southampton: Predictions
Can Tottenham bounce back from a week in the headlines for both all the right reasons? Spurs announced they will be one of the six Premier League clubs committing to the European Super League and the following morning the sacking of their manager, Jose Mourinho. Former Spurs midfielder Ryan Mason will step up from U23 managerial duties to take charge of the senior side.
The game on Wednesday night comes just a matter of days before Tottenham’s Carabao Cup final against Manchester City which has many questioning whether their key players will be rested ahead of the clash on Sunday. The Saints suffered Wembley heartbreak of their own on the weekend after Leicester City denied them a spot in the final of the FA Cup in a tight 1-0 defeat for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.
Harry Kane suffered another ankle injury in Spurs’ 2-2 draw with Everton on Friday night and there has been no word on the fitness of the 27-year-old ahead of either game this week. The England captain netted his 20th and 21st goals of the Premier League campaign at Goodison Park and the newly-appointed Mason will be sweating over his availability.
Spurs have only won one of their previous six games across all competitions, however, the Saints have not faired much better with only two wins in their last six games. The Saints remain 10 points clear of the drop zone, but a win on Wednesday would put to bed any lingering concerns over their Premier League status.
Tottenham vs Southampton: Match Stats
Harry Kane scored twice on Friday night to give Spurs the lead twice in the game, however, defensive frailties provided Everton with a route back into the game. Potentially without the talisman on Wednesday, Spurs may look to Carlos Vinicius for goals but the Brazilian has only managed to find the back of the net in the Premier League – albeit that goal did come in only his second league start.
In the earlier meeting between these two sides this season, Spurs ran out comfortable 5-2 victors. Since the Lilywhites have struggled in the league having only won one of their last four games. Given their current six-point deficit to fourth-placed West Ham (which could be extended depending on Chelsea’s game on Tuesday night) we could see a Spurs side fielded with the Carabao Cup final in mind.
