Tottenham suffered a humiliating defeat to local rivals Arsenal on Sunday which put another dent in their hopes of a top-four finish with the gap to fourth-placed Chelsea now six points. However, Jose Mourinho will still firmly believe his side have a great opportunity in the Europa League after putting in the groundwork last week for a place in the last eight of the competition.
Spurs have made light work of their knockout stage games in comparison to their struggles in the group stages despite topping the group in the end. Mourinho’s men swept Wolfsberger aside in an 8-1 thrashing on aggregate and got off to a great start last week against a Zagreb side that had only conceded three goals in the competition until they travelled to London.
Zagreb got back to winning ways on the weekend with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Varazdin as they maintained their two-point gap at the top of the Croatian First League. However, they will be without their manager, Zoran Mamic, after he was given a four-year jail sentence for fraud earlier this week.
Spurs carry over a 2-0 advantage to Croatia, but Mourinho will be looking to avoid a repeat of Sunday’s performance which saw his side only have three shots on goal in the whole 90 minutes at the Emirates Stadium.

Tottenham broke down the formidable defence Zagreb have shown across the competition this season and it was star man Harry Kane who provided both goals last week. However, this only took his tally up to three in the competition with Carlos Vinicius playing a large portion of the Europa League games. The Brazilian has netted six times in the competition this season and could start on Thursday with Spurs carrying a healthy advantage over to Croatia.
Spurs have progressed from each of their last three Europa League ties when they have carried an advantage over into the second-leg of the tie. However, Zagreb have lost just one of their last 16 European home games which came against Manchester City in 2019.
