Tottenham vs Crystal Palace: Predictions

After a stuttering start to 2021, in which Tottenham were on a run of five defeats in six games, they have since turned a corner and hit a bit of good form, winning back-to-back games for the first time since November, and closing the gap to just five points on Chelsea in fourth.

Jose Mourinho came under heavy criticism following a limp defeat to West Ham last month, but successive wins over Burnley and Fulham has rejuvenated the mood in north London (just a bit) and has taken some of the pressure off the Portuguese’s shoulders.

Crystal Palace, likewise, have had a difficult start to the New Year, with Roy Hodgson’s men winning just four of their opening 11 outings in 2021, but the Eagles take to the M25 on Sunday off the back of three games without defeat, including that smash and grab in the A23 derby against Brighton.

Away from home, they have scored just five goals in their subsequent seven games following that 5-1 thrashing over West Brom in early December. If Palace are to come up trumps in this capital clash, then Hodgson must rectify that record on the road, but there are few coaches as experienced as the former England manager to achieve just that.

Tottenham vs Crystal Palace: Match Stats

The form book does not point favourably in Palace’s favour. Since their promotion in 2013, Tottenham have kept 11 clean sheets in 15 top-flight meetings with them, which is the best record any Premier League club currently has over another in that time.

But, Mourinho will be looking to shine at both ends of the pitch, and he boasts two players who love playing against Palace: Son and Kane. The former has been directly involved in six goals across seven league starts against Palace. In fact, he only has more Premier League goals against Southampton than the Eagles. Kane meanwhile has scored more Sunday goals than any other Premier League player this season, netting 12 in 16 games.

It was a frustrating afternoon at Selhurst Park for Spurs back in December, with Kane breaking the deadlock in the 23rd minute and the visitors looking good value for that lead, but Palace came alive after the restart and netted a deserved equaliser with 10 minutes left through Jeffrey Schlupp. It meant Spurs’ unbeaten streak against Palace in the league extended to 11 games, their longest ongoing run against any side currently in the division.
