It’s been over two decades since Tottenham last started a campaign on a Saturday at 3pm , and Antonio Conte will be hoping his side fare a little better than their 2001/02 predecessors, who drew 0-0 with Aston Villa. They take on a Southampton side who have won two of their last three away league games in London.

Spurs have enjoyed a summer of major recruitment, bringing in a cohort of established stars to bulk up their already-impressive roster, including Premier League duo Richarlison and Yves Bissouma. The Italian has also looked further afield to reinforce his now Champions League side, bringing Clement Lenglet, Ivan Perisic and Djed Spence to north London as well. He’ll be hoping that quintet settle in seamlessly as he looks to establish Spurs once again as a consistent top-four side

Southampton meanwhile will be looking to improve upon their 15th-placed finish last season, with Ralph Hasenhuttl also taking a proactive approach in the market this summer, bringing in several youngsters with elite-level potential, including Armel Bella-Kotchap, Romeo Lavia, Sekou Mara and Gavin Bazunu. It’s a gamble and certainly a refreshing approach from the so-called ‘Alpine Klopp’, but will his faith in youth pay dividends? Or will a lack of experience in his squad prove their Achilles heel next term? Time will tell.

Tottenham vs Southampton match stats

This contest has the potential to be a ferocious midfield battle, with both clubs boasting some serious tacklers in the middle of the pitch. In new signing Yves Bissouma, Spurs have got their hands on a player who has made more tackles than any other Premier League midfielder in the last two seasons (180). If we go back across the last five campaigns combined, then Oriol Romeu (375) and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (372) rank third and fourth respectively for that same metric. Three players in the top percentile for hard-hitting tacklers. This could be a feisty occasion.

Another new Spurs signing who will be looking to impress from the off is Ivan Perisic. The versatile Croat has linked back up with his former boss at Inter, Conte, and will want to endear himself to the Spurs faithful on his home introduction. He was directly involved in nine goals across his last 10 Serie A games for Inter last season (three goals, six assists), so expect some serious final-third firepower from the flanks this weekend.
