After a 2-1 defeat to favourites France, five-time winners Italy will be hoping to put that defeat behind them when they face Switzerland this weekend.

Paolo Nicolato will be disappointed with the result, but not disappointed with the performance, as his side went toe-to-toe with the pre-tournament favourites. His side had equalised through Torino’s Pietro Pellegri after Arnaud Kalimuendo had given the French the lead after just 22 minutes, but a second half strike from Bradley Barcola proved to be the difference.

The Italians may have not won this tournament since 2004, but they showed positive signs in their opener as they look to better their quarter-final exit from 2021.

Opponents Switzerland however, go into the game full of confidence after a second half strike from Kastriot Imeri gave them all three points in their opening match of the tournament against Norway. Having been knocked out in the group stages in 2021, Switzerland have already recorded as many wins in 2023 as they did in 2021 and are just one goal short from also equalling their goalscoring tally.

Each of Italy U21’s last four victories have all been by 2+ goals, with a 3-0 win over Luxembourg being followed by a 4-1 victory over the Republic of Ireland, a 2-0 win over Serbia and recently beating Ukraine 3-1.

Despite ending up on the losing side, Pietro Pellegri impressed with some clever runs against France, getting himself on the scoresheet in the process. The Italian, who was mainly used as a sub for Torino this season, has now scored two goals in five games for the U21 national side and will be keen to add more, as he hopes to impress once more and secure a more prominent role at club level in 2023/24.
