Despite winning their first two group games, France go into the final round of fixtures still needing a result to qualify for the quarter-finals, such is the makeup of Group D. France are three points clear of second-placed Italy and Switzerland in third, but were they to lose against the latter while Italy win, all three would be tied on six points so we’d go to the tiebreakers.

The first tiebreaker is head-to-head points, and all three sides would be tied on three points each with one win and one draw. Then it’s head-to-head goal difference and, if France lose to Switzerland by one goal that’d be level too, so we’d go to goals scored in the head-to-head mini league before then going into overall goal difference and goals scored if the teams cannot be separated.

While that may sound very complicated, it’s actually pretty straight forward. All France need to do is draw their final game to not only confirm a place in the quarter-final but top spot, and a draw against one of Spain or Ukraine. They’ll also go through no matter what happens if Italy don’t beat Norway.

Switzerland, meanwhile, will go through and top the group if they beat France by two goals or more, giving them the head-to-head goal difference advantage. They can also qualify as long as they better Italy’s result, currently trailing the Italians on their own head-to-head record.
