Sweden have not qualified from the group stage at the European Championship in their past three tournaments, but they have given themselves a good chance following a goalless draw with Spain in their opening game. Although Sweden spent most of the match under pressure from Spain, they managed to escape with a point thanks to a mixture of good defending and poor finishing. The result extended Sweden’s unbeaten run to six games from the start of 2021, with five victories and just one goal conceded – a stark contrast to their 2021 in which they lost six of eight.

Slovakia had an even better result in their opener, beating Poland 2-1 in St Petersburg to lead Group E. When the Euro 2020 line up was confirmed, not many people would have given Slovakia a chance in a group alongside Sweden, Spain and Poland. But they were fully deserving of their victory against Poland, though they did need a bit of fortune with their opponents being reduced to 10 men when they had started to take control of the game. Like Sweden, Slovakia are unbeaten in 2021, but they have won two and drawn four of their six games.

Sweden vs Slovakia: Match Stats

As mentioned, Slovakia have been draw specialists in 2021, with Cyprus, Malta, Bulgaria and Austria all holding them. What’s more, Slovakia probably only need one more point from their final two games and may look to this Sweden match as the best place for that, looking to secure promotion prior to their final-day showdown against Spain.

But, Sweden have something to play for and after being isolated against Spain, Alexander Isak could use this match as a platform to show what he can do in front of goal. Despite having just 20 touches against Spain, Isak fashioned Sweden’s best chances of the game with his fancy footwork, shooting on one occasion and setting up Marcus Berg on the other.

Sweden vs Slovakia: Corner Stats

Sweden were on the back foot in their draw against Spain and, as a result, had just one corner to their opponents’ six. Slovakia were also “out-cornered” by their opponents at five to two, but they did score the winning goal from one of their two set pieces.

Sweden vs Slovakia: Cards Stats

Spain vs Sweden was a relatively calm affair, with Mikael Lustig receiving the only yellow card of a game that did have 18 fouls. Tomas Hubocan was booked for Slovakia in their win over Poland, who saw Grzegorz Krychowiak sent off for two yellow cards.
