The two teams are set to go head to head in the second tier for the first time since the 1977-78 season, with Sunderland prevailing 2-1 at Roker Park.

Currently eighth on their return to the Championship after back-to-back draws, the Black Cats could climb into the top six with a win at the Stadium of Light.

Although, Tony Mowbray’s side have lost just once in their last five matches, and they are now looking to win three successive home midweek games in this division for the first time since April 2005.

As for Blackpool, they find themselves 19th following a run of just one win in seven, with that sole victory a 1-0 success at Huddersfield a month ago.

Michael Appleton’s side are unlikely to be brimming with confidence, having lost each of their last three matches.

The Tangerines have also lost successive games away from home, and they are aiming to avoid doing three in a row for the first time in just under a year.

Sunderland vs Blackpool: Match Stats

Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray has never lost at home against Blackpool as a manager – winning three and drawing four of his seven previous matches.

Meanwhile, the Black Cats have kept three clean sheets from their last five games.

We can expect the referee to have a busy day. Indeed, Luke O’Nien, Corry Evans and Kenneth Dougall have all been shown four yellow cards this season, with only Isaiah Jones and Alex Scott receiving more in the Championship (both five).
