Stoke vs Tottenham: Betting tips, predictions, odds & match preview
Jose Mourinho hopes to go a step closer to winning some silverware with Spurs as his side head to the bet365 Stadium to take on Stoke City in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.
Stoke vs Tottenham: Predictions
During their Premier League years under Tony Pulis, Stoke City enjoyed a reputation of being a tough team to break down, involved in low-scoring games where the philosophy was as much about frustrating their opponents than anything else. A quick scan of recent results under Michael O’Neill suggest that the Potters are recapturing that identity in the Championship this season.
The Northern Irish boss has lifted his side up to within one place of the play-off spots in the second tier, but it’s worth noting that none of their last nine games have been settled by more than one goal – and indeed in six of those games, no more than one goal was scored. They’re attritional – but the Staffordshire are becoming more difficult to beat and more effective under O’Neill than they were under previous managers Paul Lambert and Nathan Jones.
Stoke will have to be at their absolute best to stop Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night though. The Lilywhites may not be in the highest of spirits following a difficult week in which they lost to both Liverpool and Leicester, but their squad is still packed with international quality and boss Jose Mourinho will be desperate for success in this competition this term.
The Spurs boss has won this trophy four times in his previous spells with Chelsea and Manchester United and was clearly brought to North London to win silverware after Spurs progressed under previous boss Mauricio Pochettino without adding to the trophy cabinet. This trip to the West Midlands could provide a welcome distraction from the club’s stuttering league form on Wednesday evening.

Stoke vs Tottenham: Match Stats
Stoke’s defensive action lines show just how deep they are likely to sit in order to frustrate Spurs.
Under 1.5 goals have been scored in six of Stoke City’s last seven games, so it would be foolish perhaps to expect a high-scoring game here. The Lilywhites should have enough quality to get the win, but it’s worth noting that each of their last five games have also seen fewer than four goals scored, so expect a low-scoring game with Spurs coming out on top here.
James McClean has more bookings per 90 than any other player to have played over 900 minutes of Championship football so far this season. The Republic of Ireland winger has already picked up five bookings and he is likely to have plenty of defensive work to do against either his international team-mate Matt Doherty, or Spurs’ other attacking right-back Serge Aurier in this game.
