Spain are favourites to win the tournament, thanks in part to the Barcelona contingent in their squad but La Roja haven’t had the best build up to Euro 2022. First, Jenni Hermoso was ruled out of the tournament with a knee injury having been announced as part of their provisional squad and expected to lead the line. But the biggest blow came on the eve of the tournament with star player Alexia Putellas having to withdraw after suffering an ACL injury in training.
Nevertheless, the show must go on and Spain cannot allow the absence of the Ballon d’Or winner to affect them. Spain are unbeaten in 22 matches across all competitions since losing to the USWNT team in the 2020 SheBelieves Cup, and romped through their qualification campaign. Placed in a group alongside Czech Republic, Poland, Moldova and Azerbaijan, Spain won seven of their eight matches, with one draw against Poland early on.
Group B is an incredibly tough group, with Germany and Denmark joining Spain in harbouring hopes of advancing to the knockout stages. That’s not good reading for Finland. With no disrespect, Finland are the minnows of this group and will have to be near perfect to even stand a chance of reaching the quarter-finals.
This will be Finland’s fourth appearance at the Women’s European Championships with their previous best coming the last time the tournament was held in England, reaching the semi-finals in 2005. Like Spain, Finland went unbeaten in qualifying, topping their group ahead of Portugal, Scotland, Albania and Cyprus with seven wins and one draw against second-placed Portugal.

Spain Women vs Finland Women match stats
Even without Hermoso and Putellas, Spain should be absolutely fine in front of goal, especially if Esther Gonzalez builds on her already impressive international. The 29-year-old, who plays her club football for Real Madrid, has netted 15 goals in 23 appearances for Spain.
Again, meaning no disrespect to Finland, this should be a fairly comfortable match for Spain. Unbeaten in 22 matches, Spain have also kept four clean sheets in their seven games in 2022, while Finland have failed to score against France, Netherlands (twice) and Brazil this year – all teams on a similar level as Spain.
