Group C of the 2023 Women’s World Cup is a fascinating mix of competition greenhorns, a former winner and a debutant nation. Spain are competing in their third straight tournament, while Costa Rica are in only their second World Cup. Japan are a powerhouse nation having won 2011’s edition, while Zambia are getting their first taste of action ever.

La Roja have entered golden period in their history, with the nation boasting some of the game’s biggest names, and that was evident as they made it to the World Cup having scored 53 goals and not conceded once in their qualifying campaign. Alexia Putellas is the pick of the bunch as the reigning Ballon d’Or Feminin holder, while Jorge Vilda’s squad is padded out with Barcelona stars — who won the 2022/23 Champions League.

Costa Rica qualified in 2015 — their first-ever tournament — but crashed out of the groups without a win. They did secure two draws, though, and one of those, incidentally, was against Spain on matchday one in Group E. Amelia Valverde’s side qualified this year having finished fourth in the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship, North America’s qualifying equivalent.

Spain Women vs Costa Rica Women match stats

When it comes to talent in the Spain squad, it’s hard to look past the world’s No. 1, Alexia Putellas, who is her nation’s only centurion and the only player to claim multiple Ballon d’Or Feminins. For the qualifiers, though, it was all about Esther Gonzalez and Mariona Caldentey, who scored nine and eight goals respectively as Spain flew through Group B in flawless fashion and with a +53 goal difference.

For Costa Rice, Raquel Rodriguez is the top scorer in their current squad with a commendable 55 goals, one of which came against Spain in 2015. That World Cup group game saw Spain go one-up through Vicky Losada, before Rodriguez equalised a minute later. The 29-year-old remains one of Las Ticas‘ most important and influential players and will feel confident of doing the business against Spain again.
