Spain vs Greece: Predictions

Spain were dumped out of the 2018 Russian World Cup by the hosts after their 1-1 draw in the 90 minutes saw the game eventually decided on penalties where the Russian’s clinched a spot in the quarter-finals. Since winning the 2010 World Cup, Spain have failed to progress past the Round of 16 after not making it past the group stages in 2014 too.

Thursday’s visitors have only ever qualified for three World Cup’s in their entire history, however, two of those have came in the past three competitions. Greece did not manage to qualify for Russia 2018, but did feature in both the 2010 and 2014 tournaments – making it to the Round of 16 in 2014.

Following Spain’s disappointment in the 2018 competition, they have secured their place in this summer’s European Championships and done so in style. Across their 10 games in Group F the Spaniards did not lose once as they recorded eight wins and two draws which will give Luis Enrique confidence going into these qualification games.

John van ‘t Schip’s side do come into this game in impressive form having not lost since their 2-0 defeat to Italy back in October 2019. In their nine games since that defeat to the Italians, Greece have recorded six victories and three draws which have also included six clean sheets.

Spain vs Greece: Match Stats

Alvaro Morata has found the back of the net seven times in Serie A this season across his 22 appearances. Last time out for Spain, La Furia Roja cruised to a stunning 6-0 victory over Germany and it was the 28-year-old striker who opened the scoring for the home side within the first 17 minutes.

Spain’s incredible run in their European Championship Qualifiers will provide the side with a great deal of confidence going into this game, however, they will have to be on song against a Greece side who have only conceded one goal in their last six games played in the Nations League tournament.
