The joint-most successful side in U21 European Championships history, Spain will have been disappointed by their semi-final exit in 2021, especially as they were the defending champions going into the tournament — having secured a fifth victory by beating Germany in 2019. But they are back to try to reclaim their crown and Spain have got off to a good start.
Spain qualified for this summer’s tournament with ease, winning all eight of their group games to finish nine points clear of second-placed Slovakia, the second-biggest margin of any side to qualify from top spot. Drawn in a group alongside co-hosts Romania, Ukraine and Croatia, Spain got things going with a 3-0 win against the former to sit top on goal difference.
Croatia, meanwhile, will be hoping to make it to the quarter-finals of the U21 Euros for just the second time, albeit the second time in a row. Not including when they were part of Yugoslavia, Croatia are at the U21 Euros for just the fifth time, with three group stage exits preceding the run to the quarter-finals in 2021.
In securing a third consecutive appearance this summer, Croatia had to come through the play-offs after finishing second in their group, two points behind Norway. It wasn’t an easy game in the play-offs, with Croatia eventually besting Denmark on penalties after a 3-3 draw across the two legs. And they had a similarly tough game in their tournament opener, losing 2-0 to Ukraine.

Spain U21 vs Croatia U21 match stats
Spain’s win over Romania saw them made to work hard for the victory, but eventually fitness and quality came out. Goalless at half-time, Spain scored two goals in seven second-half minutes to take control before rounding off the win in injury-time as Romania pushed for a consolation strike. Spain will be hoping for a similar showing this weekend as they look to secure their spot in the knockout stages already.
However, Spain could do even better this weekend and net early on before putting Croatia to the sword as they chase the game — especially with Croatia needing to win. In the 2-0 defeat to Ukraine, Croatia conceded in both halves, in the 19th minute and then just three minutes after the break, something Spain will be looking to exploit.
