West Ham and Southampton meet at Saint Mary’s in contrasting form this weekend, with David Moyes continuing the good work from last season to have the Hammers second after three games, while Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men are winless, but will be feeling good about themselves after that 1-1 draw with Man Utd.
As the campaign kicks into gear West Ham face their first major test of 2021/22 across the next week, as they travel to Croatia for their first Europa League fixture on Thursday against Dinamo Zagreb, so the onus is on Moyes to collect points this weekend before the added fatigue takes its toll on a relatively thin squad.
Opening wins over Newcastle and Leicester sent out a message to the rest of the division that last season’s sixth-place finish was no mere flash in the pan, but a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace last time out has just diluted expectations slightly, with signs of complacency visible in their game as the Eagles collected a deserved point.
For the Saints, their squad was pillaged over the summer so Hasenhuttl has a major job on his hands to get the club’s new signings settled and firing. Back-to-back draws have largely nullified the despondency from that opening defeat to Everton, but further dropped points here will just up the tension as they seek a first win.
Southampton vs West Ham: Match Stats
Scoring has not been an issue for West Ham this season. Since Moyes returned to the club in January 2020, his side are one of just four Premier League clubs to have scored 100 goals in the competition, along with Man City, Man Utd and Liverpool. For his part, recently-capped Jamaica international Michail Antonio has been the star scorer, with the powerful forward entering this match having both netted and assisted in each of the club’s three Premier League games so far.
It also bodes well for Moyes that Southampton have one of the leakiest defences in the division. The Saints have kept just one clean sheet in their last 24 Premier League games, conceding in each of their last 14. That being said, West Ham likewise have a very porous defence. They may be scoring goals for fun so far, but they’ve also conceded five goals, one of which came against a 10-man Leicester, and two to a then goalless Palace.

The Hammers played out an emphatic 3-0 victory against Southampton on the final day of 2020/21, a game in which fans returned to London Stadium at a reduced capacity and watched on as Moyes’ men confirmed sixth-place in the league and ensured a spot in this season’s Europa League group stages. A similar result would go down well on the eve of their first appearance in the competition.
