Southampton vs Shrewsbury: Predictions

Southampton enter this contest on the back of a 2-0 away loss to Leicester in the Premier League, undoing the exceptional work of their giantkilling against reigning champions Liverpool in the preceding match, and Ralph Hasenhuttl will be hopeful of getting back to winning ways against third-tier opposition.

The Saints have already crashed out of a domestic competition in the first stage of their inclusion this campaign, losing 2-0 to Brentford in the second round of the League Cup back in September, but the club are unbeaten in their last 30 home FA Cup matches against sides from a lower division.

Shrewsbury meanwhile have navigated tricky contests against Cambridge United and Oxford City to reach this stage of the competition, and they travel to the St Mary’s unbeaten in their last eight League One matches, including 1-0 wins in four of their last five outings.

The Shrews had won just one of their opening 15 league matches, but Steve Cotterill has turned the tide and got the Shropshire side heading back in the right direction and away from the relegation zone, generating some much-needed momentum as they journey to the South Coast.

Southampton vs Shrewsbury: Match Stats

Southampton have never lost on home soil against the Shrews in their history, nine games and counting, and should have more than enough firepower to keep that record in tact, with Che Adams among the attacking weapons Hasenhuttl can call upon to ensure that this does not turn into a banana skin fixture. The former Sheffield United forward has previously scored against Shrewsbury, netting the winner for the Blades in a League One encounter in 2016, and he will feel confident of getting the business done once more given the season he is having in the top flight.
