The final day of the 2022/23 Premier League season and the final day of Southampton’s run in the top flight, as they have been relegated to the Championship. Usually, the final home game is a time for players to do a lap of appreciation towards the fans, or for the fans to send of their squad for the summer. But how many will actually be at St Mary’s?
Southampton will finish bottom of the Premier League having lost 25 of their 37 games so far, sitting seven points behind 19th-placed Leicester. They’re in terrible form too, losing 10 of Ruben Selles’ 15 Premier League games in charge, an appointment that really didn’t work out, whilst also being in the middle of their longest winless run since March 1989.
A bad end to the season will certainly be made worse by the fact Southampton are playing Liverpool, with former defender Virgil van Dijk set to be present for their final game in the top flight. A 1-1 home draw against Aston Villa last weekend essentially ended the Reds’ Champions League hopes, despite Bobby Firmino’s 89th minute equaliser in what was his final home game for the club. The news was confirmed with both Newcastle and Man Utd picking up points in the week.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will now have to make do with the Europa League, having left themselves too much to do at the business end of the campaign. The Reds will wave goodbye to James Milner, Bobby Firmino, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who will all leave the club after this game.

Like Liverpool, Mohamed Salah has hit form at the perfect time, helping the Reds keep their Champions League hopes alive. Since the start of March, Salah has scored 11 goals in 13 Premier League matches while also recording three assists — all coming against Leicester in a 3-0 win on Monday. The Egyptian has been directly involved in 17 goals in 14 Premier League games since the start of March (11 goals, 6 assists), more than any other player in the competition in that time.
The 3-0 win over Leicester also ended a mini run of back-to-back 1-0 wins over Fulham and Brentford, though that came after a stretch of exciting matches. There was a 6-1 win over Leeds, 3-2 victory against Nottingham Forest and 4-3 win against Tottenham, as Liverpool really stretched their legs in front of goal. Add to the fact that Southampton have conceded 69 goals this season, this could get messy.
Liverpool haven’t conceded more than once in any of their last 13 Premier League games against Southampton, shipping just five goals in total since a 3-2 loss at St Mary’s in March 2016.
