As we enter the final weekend of Premier League football before the World Cup, Liverpool are currently eighth and looking to end the first part of the campaign on a high, having truly struggled for consistency. Jurgen Klopp’s side have won just five of their opening 13 Premier League matches, with four draws and four defeats.
Against Tottenham last time out, Liverpool ended a two-match losing run in the Premier League which had seen them beaten by relegation-fighting Nottingham Forest and Leeds United. But the 2-1 victory over Tottenham has then seven points behind the north London side with a game in hand. Liverpool will also be looking to string together two league wins for just the third time this season – interestingly, their winning runs have come in pairs before ending.
Southampton, meanwhile, are starting the Nathan Jones era this weekend and it’s a baptism of fire. The Saints hierarchy worked very quickly in replacing Ralph Hasenhuttl after the Austrian was sacked on Monday, appointing Jones as his successor within three days. The former Luton boss was the early odds-on favourite and it appeared that there was no intention of Southampton going for anyone else.
Jones takes over a Southampton side in the relegation zone with just three wins from their opening 14 matches, one point behind 17th-placed Bournemouth. After ending a long winless run against the Cherries, Southampton have started another winless streak, drawing their next game before losing to Crystal Palace and Newcastle United – the latter a 4-1 thrashing at St Mary’s.

Liverpool vs Southampton match stats
Mohamed Salah has finally started to find some form in the Premier League with four goals in his past five matches including the winner against Manchester City and both goals in the 2-1 win over Tottenham last weekend. The Egyptian has been directly involved in 99 Premier League goals for Liverpool (70 goals, 29 assists) in 99 matches at Anfield. Only Thierry Henry for Arsenal has been directly involved in 100+ goals in his first 100 home appearances for a single club (85 goals and 28 assists).
Jones will not have had too much time to work with his new squad, so cannot be judged on this first game, and will instead be looking forward to what is essentially another pre-season while the World Cup is on. Perhaps it’s for the best too, as Southampton haven’t fared well on their recent trips to Anfield, failing to score in their past six league visits.
