Chelsea’s record in 2023 now reads one win from nine games after they were beaten 1-0 by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League in midweek. The Blues have been suffering this year and under Graham Potter in general, with the bright start very much forgotten. After six wins from his opening nine matches across all competitions, Potter has overseen just three from his past 15 – a run which has also included eight defeats.

The Blues go into this game without a win in four across all competitions, the defeat to Dortmund preceded by a hat-trick of draws in the Premier League. As a result, Chelsea remain 10th in the Premier League, 10 points behind fourth-placed Newcastle United with the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham, Brighton, Fulham and Brentford between them. If Chelsea don’t turn things around now, they may not be playing in Europe at all next season.

On the other side of this matchup, Southampton will be hoping for a caretaker manager bounce with Ruben Selles taking the reins following Nathan Jones’ sacking. Jones’ tenure at St Mary’s only lasted 14 games after he replaced Ralph Hasenhuttl, with only one win from eight in the Premier League.

Only managing to beat Everton in mid-January, Southampton are bottom of the Premier League table and in danger of being cut adrift if their form doesn’t change. At the moment they are only three points behind 19th-placed Bournemouth and four from safety, but they need to start picking up points fast.

Chelsea vs Southampton match stats

Chelsea have struggled in front of goal this year with just four goals in their nine games across all competitions, and it’s not been a pretty watch. Overall, their seven Premier League games in 2023 have seen just nine goals scored by either side, with only Newcastle (five) and Fulham (eight) seeing fewer in their matches.

Mason Mount is out of form right now but he may find himself in the starting XI should Graham Potter opt to rotate. A boyhood Portsmouth fan, Mount has a decent record against Southampton with four goals and one assist in his five Premier League starts vs Saints, only faring better against Norwich (seven goal involvements).
